I've seen a few blogs lately and heard comments that have really bothered me. And I feel like if I don't say something, that I seem like I agree with those statements. So here it is... I'm FOR gay marriage. Now I know that this makes me a "bad mormon" in some people's eyes. However, if being accepting of all people no matter their race, religion or sexual orientation makes me a bad mormon than I'm all for it! The fact that the church is encouraging people to vote a specific way in the California elections really pisses me off. First off, the church has always said that they DO NOT tell their members how to vote... well I guess that's not so true anymore is it? I know a lot of non-members who are convinced that members of the LDS church all vote a certain way because the leadership tells them what to do and until now I've been able to say no that's not true. The fact that the church has so openly encouraged the members in California to vote for Proposition 8 and told members that do not live there to encourage people they know in CA to vote for Proposition 8 will just make people think that we do in fact vote the way "we're told".
I do NOT believe that allowing two consenting adults to choose to marry is somehow going to destroy the family as it is considered today. A family is someone who will love and care for you. That could include a number of individuals, not just mom, dad and 2.5 children.
I do NOT believe that giving someone the right to spend their life with the person they love and cherish even if they are the same sex will hurt anyone else. It wasn't too long ago that inter-racial marriage was against the law in many states. Looking back, how stupid was that?
I DO believe that we are all God's children and it is not our place to judge anyone. We are told often that it is not up to us to judge anyone for the life they live.
I DO believe that teaching our children to be accepting and respectful of all people will make the world a better place.
I DO believe that we are born wired the way we are. Some of us are attracted to the opposite sex and some the same sex. That doesn't make anyone a bad or evil person.
All this Proposition is doing is pushing fear, hate and intolerance. Three things that we do not need in our world and should be fighting against, not for. So I would encourage anyone that I know in CA to vote AGAINST Prop. 8 on election day.
I do not mean to offend anyone with this post. If you disagree with my opinion, that is your right and I respect that. I simply felt the need to make my view known. Feel free to leave comments, just do so with respect to myself and others.

HAHA those pregnancy hormones are REALLY getting to ya, aren't they??? JK. I appreciate your honesty and frankness of this blog. This is such a touchy subject and I don't understand why people are so ignorant to one another :( I am in agreeance with you on the whole "all mormons vote the same and think alike". It's stupidity at its finest!!! We are all individuals, we are all children of God. We all have our OWN minds, but thanks to those who think we are sheep, and only capable to think one way!!!! Ok so I have made these exact arguments in discussion with people, this could be the taken straight to my blog and not have anything changed. I was so pissed when I heard the church was doing that, and they've been talking about it at church and it is really getting to me! Thanks sis!
You don't know me, but I just had to comment. I'm friends with your sister Halley (who I adore, by the way). Way to go on this post! I agree with everything you said. Kudos for not judging others like (it seems) everyone else is doing. You are a class act.
you don't know me either and I don't know you. and its an accident im here. I agree with you that we should love and accept people. I also agree and follow the prophets.
u are however confusing church policy. politacally the church doed not endorse canadites or parties. but they do speak up on specific issue's. if a prophet of god says to do something that u don't understand maybe u should ask him for the understanding.
it will all work out in the end.
We are to be tolerant to gays, not excepting. This isn't a political issue it's a MORAL issue, that's why the church took a stand. This is obviously a serious enough issue that the PROPHET OF GOD spoke up to remind us of SIMPLE gospel doctrine. Thanks heavens for that! There are far to many people out there who are caught up in these worldly issues/times and are far to accepting of alternative lifestyles.
We should feel comfort in knowing that the church is firm and never changing. The only thing that is changing is its followers, who many choose to live their lives to loosley.
WOW!! To "anonymous" (both that is), when have you ever been taught in church that you should discriminate against anyone? I would have to say, NEVER! The fact that gays/lesbians are not getting the same rights as another is considered discrimination, plain and simple. And this is a political issue. When there is something that is voted on, no matter what, it IS political! And it is time that we stop discrimination. There is already enough of that in this world. I am not saying the LDS church made a mistake, but it interesting that a few days after their statement they had to release people of their 'callings' and to immediately stop getting involved in the name of the church. So I am with Brittany, VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 8!!!!!

And as for the article you said to read, I read it. And from the church's stand point, of course they are going to say what they did. But what they are saying is for gays/lesbians to live a life where they have to hide their feelings and never know true love. That is not fair to all people. There are some that will chose to live that way, while others, knowing the consequences from the church, will chose to live a life where they can love and act on their feelings. And that is fine. And although they can't go to the temple or partake in any other mormon practices, they should not be discriminated against in any other way. All they want are the benefits you receive as if they were married. What is so wrong with that?
